Aging is a gradual and irreversible pathophysiological process that manifests in a deterioration of tissue and cell functions and a significant increase in the risk of suffering from various age-related diseases, such as neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, metabolic, musculoskeletal, and immune system diseases. An analysis by the United Nations (UN) estimates that by 2050, the number of people aged 65 years and over worldwide will be twice the number of children under 5 years old and almost equivalent to the number of children under 12 years old.
