Abstract

Toxoplasmosis is a disease caused by the protozoan T. gondii, which affects a third of the world's population. According to WHO data, these figures are not updated. The consumption of infective oocysts that are found in the inadequate handling and ingestion of foods such as raw or undercooked meat, contaminated vegetables, or water with the presence of oocysts, the increase in the prevalence in our country, Latin America, and the Caribbean that contributes On the development of this disease it is acquired congenitally in pregnant women, in ocular toxoplasmosis, the parasite lodges in the retina causing retinitis. It manifests itself at any age, after birth the infection can be acute or chronic. It can be said that, with the passage of each gestational week, the risk of maternal-fetal transmission will increase, therefore the probability of asymptomatic congenital toxoplasmosis increases. Diagnosis during pregnancy should be carried out, in order to establish whether the fetus is infected, by means of the diagnosis of amniotic fluid (amniocentesis), histological, and ultrasound. Treatment in pregnant women could reduce the incidence and severity of the fetal infection.
