In late December 2019, a new pneumonia of unknown origin was detected in patients linked to a wholesale seafood and wet animal market in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. After analyzing respiratory epithelial cell samples from one patient, a beta coronavirus closely related to the one that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV) was detected. This new coronavirus was provisionally described as novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV); however, on February 11, 2020, the World Health Organization named the disease caused by 2019-nCoV “Coronavirus Disease 2019” (COVID-19).
